Welcome to Kestrels Class -Year 4

Class Teachers: Vicky Darious & Laura Flower

Learning Journey

This half term our learning journey questions are:

Relationships: Can I understand the importance of being empathetic in my actions? This will involve the children learning about the importance of trying to understand how other people might be feeling. The children will explore what empathy means and reflect on how they have shown empathy themselves, developing this essential social skill in the process.

Reading

This year, year 3 and 4 will be recording their reading through a reading journal. We expect children to read with you every day and then offer them the chance to be creative when recording their reading at home using the Independent Activity list. Please encourage your child to choose an activity from the list and share it with us. Children should be bringing their reading book into school as there are opportunities each day for the children to be reading for pleasure.

Maths

In Sparrows Class this half term in maths, we are starting the year by looking at place value. This will involve the children reasoning their answers by collaborating together as well as proving their answers with resources. Homework will be set based on the learning that we have covered in our lessons, to enable the children to demonstrate their understanding as well as cementing the knowledge.

History

As a historian, can I describe how key innovations during the rule of Queen Victoria helped to make modern Britain? Our history enquiry will enable the children to get a sense of how Queen Victoria’s rule shaped British society. We will be looking at what life was like at the beginning and end of her reign, and also comparing life in the Victorian era to that of modern Britain. Once we have explored the development of the London Underground as a class, the children will have the confidence to explore another Victorian innovation and how it influenced life in Britain, producing their very own information text.

PE Days

Our PE day is every Friday. We are lucky enough to have Exeter City Football club, who are taking the sessions in the first half term. The children last year truly benefitted from these sessions, learning vital skills such as how to be a good team player, how to communicate during games and how to cope when a game didn’t go as planned. Please ensure that your child comes in with the correct PE kit – white t-shirt, black shorts/ leggings or jogging bottoms and trainers.

Outdoor Learning

Our outdoor learning is on a Monday. Please ensure that your child has the appropriate clothing (water proof coat and wellies in the wetter and colder months, and sun cream and sun hat in the warmer, sunnier months). Our outdoor sessions are a fantastic opportunity for the children to develop skills in team building, communication and problem solving.

Homework

The children are expected to read for at least 10 minutes every day. They are also expected to practice their times tables (Times Tables Rockstars will support this). In addition to this, we set another piece of work based on what we are learning in class. Homework books are expected to be handed in every Thursday and will be sent home every Friday.
