Learning Journey

Throughout the year in Reception Robins, your child will engage in a variety of learning experiences linked to the 7 areas of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). Our approach encourages collaboration, creativity, and independence, helping children develop key skills through hands-on exploration and play. Continuous Provision is central to our classroom, offering a range of carefully planned resources that children can access independently.

This term, our learning will focus on exploring exciting questions like ‘How am I different to my friends?’, where children will discover what makes each of them unique. We’ll also work on storytelling skills, asking ‘Can I retell a story?’, encouraging creativity and language development. And as part of our outdoor adventures, we’ll explore the world around us with the question ‘Where can my wellies take me?’, inspiring curiosity and a love for nature.

Phonics and Reading

At Newtown we are passionate about reading! Each week, we introduce three new sounds, which your child will learn to blend together to form and read words. We are excited to have a special friend, Fred the Frog, who helps us along the way with our phonics learning. During the first four weeks, phonics lessons are taught as a whole class. After this, we move into smaller groups based on your child's learning stage, rather than age. This allows us to tailor the lessons to meet each child’s individual needs, providing additional support or challenge where necessary.

Once your child is confidently blending sounds and reading words, they will begin bringing reading books home. It is important that these books are brought to school each day, and we encourage you to listen to your child read at home at least three times a week. Please make sure to record their reading progress in their learning journal.

Starting from the first week of school, your child will also bring home a ‘reading for pleasure’ library book. This is a special book for you to read to them, exposing them to a wide range of wonderful stories. These books will be changed weekly.

Outdoor Learning

Every Monday we participate in outdoor learning. Please ensure that your child has the appropriate clothing (a waterproof coat and wellies in the wetter and colder months, and sun cream and a sun hat in the warmer, sunnier months). We encourage all children to bring a pair of wellies that stay in school, as we like to make the most of our fabulous outside area throughout the year!

P.E Days

Our PE days are a Tuesday and Thursday. After October half term our Thursday P.E session will be with Lily from Exeter City who will be teaching the children fundamental skills, such as throwing, catching and balancing. Please could you also provide a change of school clothes for your child which can be left on their peg in case of any accidents.

Homework

Every Friday a weekly letter is sent home to share the children's weekly learning and to set any homework activities.

If you ever have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to speak to either myself or Ms. White. We are always happy to assist and ensure your child has the best experience in Reception!
